Honda is known for its commitment to innovation and engineering. Now, the company is celebrating 50 years of research and development in the U.S. This anniversary highlights five decades of progress in areas like aviation, power equipment, aerospace, and powersports, as well as its core automotive business.
Looking Back in History
Honda began its American journey in 1975 by opening its first research facility in Southern California. This center focused on testing and product development, helping Honda create safer and more advanced vehicles and equipment. Today, Honda operates more than 20 R&D sites nationwide, working on everything from material design to advanced safety features.
Honda's Current R&D Facilities
With its nationwide presence, Honda has grown from a one-facility operation to a company with a formidable industry presence. Honda now has advanced R&D facilities in key locations across the country, including Colorado, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, and North Carolina, in addition to its original location in California.
Despite their geographic spread, every site operates with the singular goal of producing nearly 40 distinct types of Honda and Acura vehicles. While they operate nationwide, Honda's R&D facilities share the same mission: to build Honda and Acura vehicles and equipment that are as safe and technologically advanced as possible. Honda's efforts have paid off so far, as the automaker's vehicles have received numerous awards for “North American Car of the Year” and “North American Truck of the Year.” Along with its auto awards, Honda has also earned recognition for its powersports and power equipment innovations, as well as its HondaJet performance.
Honda's Advanced Research
Looking toward the next 50 years, Honda is shifting its focus to revolutionary fields such as nanotechnologies, quantum computing, and carbon capture. The automaker is actively pursuing partnerships to advance battery technology, hydrogen fuel cells, and sustainable energy solutions. Furthermore, Honda is prioritizing the development of improved human-software interfaces and new mobility options designed for drivers with challenges, to ensure a better experience for all customers.
