Luckily, the fully redesigned 2016 Honda Civic was developed to both avoid and mitigate accidents with pedestrians and cyclists. While no one wants to think of getting into an accident with a pedestrian, it’s something that happens more frequently than most realize. For this reason, Honda’s engineers went to work to ensure that the all-new Civic would be designed to significantly minimize injuries to pedestrians if accidents occur.
Living in a city where there’s lots of foot traffic and cyclists all around, it’s important to be mindful as a driver. The Honda Civic aids commuters with technologies that not only detect other vehicles, but also pedestrians. The Honda Sensing suite encompasses several technologies, including Forward Collision Warning and Collision Mitigation Braking among other systems.
On top of this, the Civic’s physical design now implements several features that minimize the risk of injury for pedestrians. Torque News touted the updates in a recent review and said other automakers should make the same changes. According to the publication, the car’s pedestrian injury mitigation design includes the following: a deformable hood and hood hinges, an impact energy absorbing windshield base, fender supports and mounts that absorb impact energy, and breakaway windshield wiper pivots.
Along with enhancing safety for pedestrians, Civic is projected to receive a top overall safety score from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ title from the IIHS for its excellent occupant-protection abilities. In addition to safety enhancements, the redesigned Civic gains other updates that you can read about here.
