It’s been confirmed: The next Honda Civic is going to get a boost in power and fuel economy thanks to the introduction of a new standard engine! Back in 2013, Honda mentioned that the sedan would likely get a turbocharged powerplant on future models and now that point is quickly approaching.

When talking to Automotive News, Honda’s head of Research and Development, Yoshiharu Yamamoto, stated that the next Civic will come equipped with a downsized turbocharged engine. Don’t let the word downsized fool you either. While the car is expected to receive a 1.5-liter turbo, which will replace the non-turbo 1.8-liter four-cylinder that’s featured on base models, the new engine is going to offer more power and better fuel economy.

The outgoing base engine rates in at 143 horsepower/159 lb.-ft. of torque and shoppers can expect a nice bump up from that when the 2016 Honda Civic rolls into town. The next model will also surpass the current Civic sedan’s EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 33 mpg combined (30 city/39 highway)* - that’s with the CTV by the way. As you can see, the car offers excellent efficiency, but soon it’ll be even better!

Civic is a favorite among shoppers and we’re excited to see that Honda is making further efforts to improve its award-winning formula. Keep on the lookout for details from us about its release date later this year.
