For many of us, washing our car by hand can be fun, and, in some ways, therapeutic. It’s also a great way to protect your investment because it keeps your vehicle’s appearance up. However, there are some things to watch out for, so you don’t accidentally do more harm to your auto than good. Here are some good car-washing tips:

Before Washing

It’s always best to first rinse your ride before you wash it. This will remove any loose dirt and debris that’s on your car. Remember to clean your vehicle from the top and then work your way down. You’ll also want to clean windows and panels before washing the lower half, because lower car panels are often the dirtiest.

Wash Often

Biohazards like bird droppings and bug remains can accumulate quickly on your car. These elements can eat away at your car’s clear coat and create weak spots on the finish. When you see them try to remove them immediately and get your vehicle washed. Washing once a week is a good habit to follow, because it will help remove any residual impurities that are still on it.

Dry With Caution

You’ll want to steer clear of using paper or bathroom towels to dry your vehicle. These can leave tiny scratches on the surface, so instead use a soft, microfiber towel to dry your car.

Remember to dry windows and mirrors first. This way water won’t have enough time to dry on them and leave water spots.

After you’re done with the outside, dry the interior trunk area (around the creases), and door jams.

Make sure you use a new towel for drying your wheels. This will help you avoid cross-contamination on your paint.

Use a Sealant

Finish washing your car by applying a wax or spray sealant to the finish. This will help renew the existing wax that’s already on the metal.

Having your vehicle detailed at least once a year will help keep its appearance looking great, as well.
