In order to prepare for the city’s upcoming holiday festivities, help is needed to build the centerpiece: a 100-foot Christmas tree! For over 20 years, volunteers have helped put the tree together and this year the month-long project is in the works again. It was started in early November and must be finished by the 25th of the month, which means there’s still time for you to lend a hand.
How do volunteers help?
Volunteers are needed to fluff thousands of branches and attach them to the tree. Volunteers also check all of the tree’s 15,000 LED bulbs to make sure they’re in working order, along with performing other tasks. Local Delray Beach restaurants provide food to keep everyone energized. This season, eateries like 32 East, Cabana El Rey, Lemon Grass, Dada, Sazio and many others have donated food to volunteers.
What festivities take place after the tree is built?
Once Delray Beach’s Christmas tree is put together, visitors can go see it in its full glory and enjoy holiday activities like ice skating, a Christmas carousel and train rides, all of which run from Dec. 3 through Jan. 1, 2016. See schedule below. The tree is also where people gather and activities take place following the Delray Beach Holiday Parade on Saturday, Dec. 12.
What is the tree made of?
To start, the tree uses 650 steel panels and a metal frame that weighs 30,000 pounds. On top of this, plenty of dazzle is provided by 39,500 ornaments and those 15,000 LEDs we mentioned earlier. Lights and decorations are attached to the tree’s 3,086 branches, which weigh in at 9,800 pounds.
