The new 2016 Honda Pilot was named the No. 1 top auto show vehicle by Cars.com and when you learn about its redesign you’ll understand why critics are fawning over it. The SUV gains a new Elite trim level, improved efficiency and power, a fabulous updated look and Honda’s very first nine-speed transmission!

Thoroughly re-engineered for the 2016 model year, Honda says Pilot is a showcase for the brand’s new technology and design highlights. On the exterior, sleeker window styling, a tapered roof and creased panels give it a slimmer shape, plus it’s gained 3.5 inches in length so you can expect a slight increase in cabin room. Three brand-new paint colors are available, too - Steel Sapphire Metallic, Lunar Silver Metallic and Black Forest Pearl.

The 3.5-liter EarthDreams V-6 has been retuned to produce more power (280 hp compared to the previous 250 hp - whoa!) and greater efficiency. Honda says shoppers should expect the eight-passenger SUV to achieve class-leading fuel economy even with its power gains. The upgraded engine comes paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, while upper trims get that nine-speed we mentioned earlier. Other notable under-the-hood changes include a new chassis and new all-wheel-drive system, which adds a terrain management function so you can adjust performance depending on road conditions.

A host of new driver-assist technologies are thrown in the pot too, including Honda’s cutting-edge lane-departure, blind-spot and forward-collision mitigation systems, among several other technologies. You’ll not only feel more protected in the cabin, but also more entertained. The brand’s latest infotainment and navigation technologies are included, and the cabin overall has a more luxury feel thanks to improved materials.

Regarding the SUV’s update, David Thomas, managing editor for Cars.com said, “The biggest success isn't the clear family-focus inside, but the way Honda was able to maintain terrific visibility while totally reimagining the new Pilot's exterior. Families will go nuts over the thoughtfulness of the interior and features like double cupholders in the rear doors and a flexible cargo area, if they're not too busy watching one of the many electronic devices this SUV can support.”
