Imagine never having to worry about getting a flat again. Well, within the next decade or so this could be reality. Bridgestone is working on a tire that drivers would never have to inflate. The company's unique prototype features numerous shock-absorbing resin bands surrounded by replaceable rubber "tread."
The tire first debuted in 2011, but has seen many improvements since then. Recently exhibited at the Paris Motor Show, the second-generation prototype has an enhanced design with better energy-absorbing shocks and better heat conduction. For the next phase of upgrades, the company says it will focus on dealing with lateral stiffness, which directly affects steering. Over two to four years, Bridgestone will work on producing new prototypes that deal with this and other issues.
Today, under- and over-inflated tires are a problem for many drivers, not only because they affect performance, but also because they have a higher likelihood of blowing out and causing accidents. To combat this, drivers must have their tire pressure checked periodically, but if airless tires ever became a real-world option they would prevent this dilemma entirely.
Also, when the tread on your tires wears out, it's simply time to purchase a new set, but Bridgestone's prototype includes a rubber surrounding that can easily be replaced. Furthermore, the tire mogul says every part of the airless tire is recyclable.
We're excited to see what enhancements are in store for Bridgestone's future tire prototypes. Until then, make sure you show your tires some TLC by having them rotated, aligned and properly inflated at Delray Honda! Or purchase a new set of tires in Delray Beach if yours have low tread or are nearly "bald." We sell high-quality products from many companies, including Michelin, Goodyear and Bridgestone!
